Doris Wasson, Director of Operations at O,R&L Facility Services helps with the finishing touches on the Tower of Light in preparation for the November 12, 2013 Illumination Ceremony at Orlando City Hall, Orlando, FL.

Ms. Wasson, working in conjunction with the CREW Orlando (Commercial Real Estate Women) as Project Manager for the restoration also assisted in the fundraising effort for the project by working with vendor partners to donate or greatly reduce their fees and services. In retail dollars, the restoration would have exceeded $150,000. With Ms. Wasson’s assistance, CREW Orlando was able to complete the work for just over a third of that cost.

The “Tower of Light,” by artist Ed Carpenter, was commissioned and installed in 1992 under the leadership of Mayor Bill Frederick. The original metal halide lighting failed in 1994. Many attempts at funding a relighting project were discussed in the interim but none came to fruition. In fact, due to the lack of funding, especially during the economic downturn, there was little to no maintenance at all performed to the sculpture or base.Knowing that the City’s See Art Orlando project was slated for debut in late 2013, the Orlando chapter of Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) pledged to raise a minimum of $50,000 to clean and light the sculpture and re-work the basin.
